Huge congratulations and a giant thank you to everyone who gave their time and money to help elect Manka Dhingra. The road to a Blue Washington is underway. As Dow Constantine said at Dhingra's election night celebration, "Now we can fund some schools!"
Yet, in many ways our work has just begun.
Democrats will now have a slim majority in both the State Senate and State House. So it will be less easy for the GOP to block everything the D's try to do. But to fully pass the progressive changes Washington needs (higher teacher pay, smaller class sizes, cleaner energy, and effective mental health outreach) a one-seat margin in the Senate and a two-seat margin in the House won't be enough. We need a solid majority.
That's where 2018 comes in. This year, a special election allowed us to win a swing victory and tip—just barely!-- the legislature in our favor. Next year there will be dozens of races, and the stakes couldn't be higher.
In the coming year, Friends of Washington is committed to helping guide you through the half-dozen of these most important state legislative races. We’ll keep you informed so you can help out early and support the candidates who will help us build a fairer, brighter, more compassionate Washington.
But for now, thank you to Manka Dhingra who took on the challenge of a hard-fought election, and to other brave candidates like Michelle Rylands and Karen Hardy, who got Democrats fired up in their districts, efforts which will only help us in the future as we build voting energy across our state.
Most of all, thank you for your attention, your dollars, and your efforts to flip the Washington Legislature! We did it! Stay tuned for more monthly updates from Friends of Washington, with actionable, inside scoop info to help you make good decisions with your time and your money, to keep making a difference across this great state of ours.
